Luncheon at the German Residence – 19 October 2016

Wednesday 19 October 2016 became an elegant affair as CSS gathered at the impressively picturesque German Residence at the generous invitation of Mrs Gerlind Rothen, Spouse of the German CG in Shanghai. The rain couldn’t dampen our spirits as well as our hostesses’ as she went out of her way to make the afternoon a memorable one! Located in the romantic area of the Former French Concession, the German Residence is one of the heritage protected buildings in Shanghai.

Characterised by charming beauty, the house is laid in front of an elaborate and immaculately kept garden, it has decorated ceilings and colourful stained glass windows and boasts a lovely staircase as you enter. We were all ears as Gerlind gracefully presented the residence which is said to have been built in the 1940’s with its owner back then being a Chinese architect who desired to have a French style dream house. Following Gerlind’s presentation was a presentation by the Director of Admissions at the Shanghai Livingston American School, Mr Carlton Lamb. Very informative presentation particularly for those with school going children and living in the Hongqiao area, especially with the 50% discount the school is offering to the diplomatic community!

By this time the house was infused with the most tantalising and hunger inducing cuisine aroma…soon after the presentations Gerlind invited us to feast on her wonderfully spread buffet lunch. The atmosphere was great and the food was sumptuous. CSS members greatly enjoyed the gathering, thanks to Gerlind’s warm hospitality.

Thank you Gerlind, keep flying the German flag high!
